The History

… begins in 2001. That’s the year we founded the ‘German-Guinean Society (Bissau) e.V.’ in Cologne. For our friends in Guinea-Bissau, it really gets going in 2004 – with the construction and opening of the school!
Spring 2004

Wasteland

The school is to be built here. So far, hundreds of cashew trees have been growing on our property. To make room for the school, some of them now have to be felled.

Spring 2004

Clearing

We found the same number of helpers in the surrounding area. With simple tools, even the thickest roots are dug out. Faster than expected, the thicket clears.
Frühjahr 2004

Building land

That should be enough for now. The pegs in the ground mark the dimensions of the first two school buildings. Without any major excavations, two floor slabs are poured on the flat ground.
Summer 2004

Shell construction

The walls are being raised before the rainy season begins. The single-storey construction saves the need to build complex scaffolding. Because of the ubiquitous termites, we decide on concrete and against clay.

Autumn 2004

Ready to move in

A covered walkway connects the two school buildings. Each consists of a large classroom and small rooms for the secretariat and toilets. The wide roof overhang protects the masonry from the extreme rainfall around the middle of the year.

Autumn 2004

Bird’s eye view

Cashew trees as far as the eye can see. And in the middle of it all, a small school. Even now, we can see what we will be told again and again later: it is the most beautiful far and wide.
11 December 2004

A grand welcome

The big political names are coming to the opening ceremony. Representatives of the national education authority and the regional government have also been invited, and television is there when we cut the tape. It’s finally happening!
11 December 2004

Great fun

While the elders are holding long speeches, our friend Carlos is already inspiring the young ones. Fun and games are part of it from the very beginning. We are able to experience early on what still amazes us today: school here is a pleasure!

11 December 2004

Party!

The opening ceremony lasts the whole day. A mobile beverage cart provides refreshments at high temperatures. A Moselle vintner gave it to us, along with the tractor.

Proud as Punch

Behind us the poles with the flags of the country and the school, in front of us the plaque of the school and the first benefactor. From left to right: co-founders of the association Raoul Mörchen and Beate Schüler with Carlos Robalo.

Juni 2005

Let the water flow!

Finally, our own water. A specialist company is drilling a 60-metre-deep well on our behalf. It takes that depth to ensure that the water is free of all germs.
Oktober 2005

The Tower

After the successful drilling, the water tower is now also in place. A small solar-powered pump ensures a reliable water level throughout the year. The investment in good quality has paid off. Twenty years later, the pump and tower are still securing the school’s drinking water supply.

Oktober 2005

Cheers!

At the beginning of the second school year, the children will be able to draw water themselves for the first time. We have built a second tap outside the school grounds for the people of the surrounding villages. They too can now drink clean water at any time without worry.

September 2006

Enjoy your meal!

The new canteen offers space for 100 children to eat lunch together. The school meals programme is supported by the UN’s food and agriculture organisation, FAO.

März 2009

It’s a must, too

The tiny toilets in the school buildings have had their day. A new sanitary block offers facilities for both boys and girls, along with a central washing block. Not everything is used by everyone, but this is a place of learning.

September 2006

Mensa? Palaver!

The largest room in the school now also serves as a meeting room, for example for parents‘ days and village meetings. During the long rainy season, this is a welcome alternative to the otherwise popular meetings in the shade of the cashew trees.

Oktober 2009

The school is growing

More and more children want to attend school, and the existing classes are already far too full. At the beginning of our sixth year, we are inaugurating two new class houses. Our architect Kirsten Nepstad has designed a modular plan that allows us to expand the initial model step by step with additional buildings.

Herbst 2007

Major weeding

It’s the same story every time: after the rainy season ends, the school grounds are hopelessly overgrown. The older students help with the big clean-up. That’s how we do things when it comes to other work too: responsibility and commitment to the school is a duty. We don’t need to persuade them to do it.

Frühjahr 2010

Field of dreams

So far, we have managed somehow, but now we need a real sports field! To do that, the trees and undergrowth have to go. The kids will do most of the work themselves.

Frühjahr 2010

The first kick

From now on, there will be football here until the balls burst. For great fun, a couple of wooden slats are enough as goalposts.

Juni 2012

Great spider

Since we opened the new playground, the climbing spider has been in high demand. Special sand ensures a soft landing if you do happen to fall.

Sommer 2013

Victims of success

What should we do? More and more children want to learn with us – we have to expand. This summer, school buildings number 7 and 8 will be built. That’s it for us. From now on, we have space for three hundred and fifty pupils.

Mai 2014

Light on

After a long period of preliminary planning, we repaired the defective solar system, modernised and expanded it extensively. Thanks to new batteries, the system is now much more efficient and not only provides lighting for the interior rooms, but also operates a large amplifier system for the sound system at the popular school festivals.

Herbst 2014

Long March

For many children, the journey to school is long and arduous. Some need almost an hour to finally walk through the school gate after leaving their homes along the main road. Only some older children have bicycles.

November 2016

Self-catering

… the school is not yet, but the first cassava is sprouting in its own school garden and will soon be added to the lunch menu.

Februar 2018

Foodies

The now sadly deceased cook Segunda Imbunde proudly presents her new oven in the outdoor kitchen, which was built by former students and scholarship holders.
März 2019

The good wall

Now the goats and pigs and other uninvited guests are a thing of the past in the school garden. We hesitated for a long time about walling the property. Now we are doing the same as others who value their possessions here in the country. A one-kilometre-long wall protects the school and everyone who wants to learn and grow there.
Sommer 2019

Coole Streber

Januar 2020

Young researchers

Since the completion of the last school buildings, the motto has been: quality instead of more quantity. We no longer want to be bigger, we want to be better. A small step in this direction: microscopes for biology lessons.
Herbst 2021

Colourful learning

The same applies in Guinea-Bissau: learning is more effective in a pleasant environment. The pupils have brightened up many classrooms with wall paintings. The garlands are from the last school festival and are here to stay.
Herbst 2021

Stillgestanden!

Sommer 2022

Unanimously

In recent years, the wonderful music teacher Juca has patiently honed the school’s sound. The school choirs are a hit at every celebration and are applauded throughout the region.
Sommer 2022

Play and education

Over time, the school library has grown steadily. Pupils can find not only books that supplement their lessons, but also games, novels and comics.
Frühjahr 2023

High-tech under cashew trees

Thanks to a donation from a state-owned foundation, the school is now the only one far and wide that offers computer science courses in its own computer room with access to the internet. We have also been given a new solar system. A real blessing, because the old one was completely dilapidated.
Herbst 2024

School bus

An old fire engine in absolute dream condition, refurbished and equipped with indestructible technology – that’s what the new school bus will be. We will be shipping it from Germany to Bissau in the next few weeks.

Sommer 2024

Solar energy system

The panels for the new solar energy system are being installed. They were donated to the school by a local company. A real blessing, as the old ones were completely dilapidated.
